When Do My Car Fluids Need Changed?

Man checking oil

A vehicle’s engine and working parts are truly a wonder that we often take for granted. It takes several moving parts with varying temperatures, chemicals, and air flow to get your vehicle moving and to keep it in the best shape possible. Regularly replacing your vehicle’s fluids at the proper intervals will greatly extend the longevity of your vehicle, prevent untimely break down, reduce the likelihood of expensive repairs, and keep your car running in the best shape possible.

Here at World Class Auto, your Main Street mechanic in American Fork, we are proud to offer fast, affordable, and comprehensive vehicle fluid replacement services. With same day appointments, free customer shuttle, and top-of-the-line BG Fluids, we make keeping your vehicle in the best shape possible easier than ever.

Here are the recommended fluid changing intervals for your vehicle. Make sure to stay on top of these and give us a call to schedule your appointment as soon as possible!

Motor/Engine Oil

Motor oil is definitely on the top of the priority list when it comes to checking vehicle fluids. Oil should be changed according to the Severe Service interval in your owner’s manual, typically around the 5,000 mile mark depending on the type of oil you use (hint: Synthetic protects better and lasts longer)

Transmission Oil

How often transmission oil should be changed will vary by vehicle type, and what type of transmission oil is used in your vehicle. You can drain the transmission oil pan and change the filter, or go for a full flush by removing and replacing all the fluid in an automatic transmission. Most all automatic transmissions need regular maintenance. A good rule of thumb is every 3 years or 30,000 miles. Remember, it’s cheaper to maintain than replace!

Coolant

Coolant is an often overlooked fluid when it comes to vehicles. As coolant ages, its pH can change and cause the engine to rot from the inside out. It is best to have the coolant flushed and changed every 3 years. However, manufacturers recommendations vary, so it is best to check with the recommended coolant replacement intervals with your specific manufacturer.

Brake Fluid

When left in the system too long, brake fluid can become incredibly corrosive. For this reason, it is recommended that you change the brake fluid every two years. If you’re replacing brake parts for any reason, it is a good idea to get the brake fluid flushed while you’re at it. We’re happy to offer affordable and thorough brake fluid pH testing and flushes to help you get the greatest performance and longevity out of your vehicle.

Power Steering Fluid

If you have an electric steering system, you won’t have to worry about this one. For everyone else, the rule of thumb is to replace your power steering fluid every three years or 30,000 miles.
