Extending the Life of Your Transmission


Your vehicle’s transmission is the second most expensive component.

It’s critical to make sure you’re taking the right steps to keeping your transmission going for as long as possible.

By following these steps, you’ll be able to extend the life of your transmission:

1 – Change your transmission fluid every 15,000 miles or at least once each year.

2 – When it’s cold outside, allow your vehicle to warm up before putting it into gear.

3 – Be sure to come to a complete stop when changing from reverse to drive or drive to reverse.

4 – Avoid rocking back and forth when you are stuck in mud or snow if at all possible.

5 – Avoid driving when your transmission fluid is low or leaking.

6 – Avoid downshifting to slow down.

7 – Do not perform high speed starts or spinning your tires to get going.

8 – Make a habit of using your parking brake when parking on a hill. The parking brake reduces stress on the parking pawl and helps to prevent leakage.

9 – Be careful to avoid bumping curbs when parking. Even slight bumps can cause brief and unnecessary loads on the front wheel drive shaft of the transmissions trans-axle.

10 – Get your transmission serviced at least once a year. Be sure to ask about transmission service if you are not asked about it when you get regular maintenance.

11- Be sure to get any transmission concerns addressed as soon as possible. Early diagnostics and regular maintenance could save you thousands in repairs down the road.
